Transmission Wind, video, camera: Sabine Mooshuber, 2020

In ‘Transmission Wind’, the artist once again seeks and finds direct encounters with the forces of nature. The video shows her on the ridge of the Jochberg between heaven and earth, with a flag and self-sewn balloon fabric tubes, familiar as wind indicators at airports and on bridges, firmly attached to her body. The 11-minute video (camera: Sabine Mooshuber) allows us to witness how, after an initial lull, a foehn storm picks up, which the artist struggles to withstand – and does not always succeed in doing so – demanding all her strength.

Winds are more than just atmospheric phenomena. Are they not also idiosyncratic, wondrous forms of life?

Winds are more than just atmospheric phenomena. Aren't they also idiosyncratic, wondrous creatures? Michael Ondaatje's book ‘The English Patient’ tells of a whirlwind in southern Morocco, the Aajej, which the locals defend themselves against with knives. And then there is the Beshabar, a black, dry wind from the northern Caucasus. The novel's hero, Count Almásy, also tells his astonished lover about the Harmattan, a violent wind that plunges like a dying bird into the rough waters of the Atlantic to drown there... Munich artist Judith Egger also surrendered herself to the fascinating element of wind last year. Two of the video works she created are featured in the Gedok group exhibition ‘Wind’ at the Buchheim Museum in Bernried.

For this performance, I will sew myself a ‘windbreaker suit’ complete with a windsock made of balloon silk and, when the wind conditions are right, stand on a suitable mountain (the Jochberg near Kochel is planned). The wind will inflate my suit and the bag, allowing me to physically feel and visualise it. This work is the third part of a series. The two previous works are called ‘Transmission Wood’ and ‘Transmission Waves’.
